The minister was addressing a workshop organised by the Environment Department  on E-Waste Management for bulk consumers. He stressed upon the importance of creating public awareness about the hazards of improper disposal of E-waste. During the workshop presentations on E-waste legislations and management by experts Dr Amit Jain, MD, IRG Systems, South Asia, and Ms Priti Mahesh, Chief Programme Coordinator, Toxics Link, an organization dedicated to creating a toxics-free world. The Government of India had notified revised E-Waste Management Rules, 2016 on 23.03.2016 and which have come into force w.e.f. 1.10.2016. These Rules are applicable to every manufacturer, producer, bulk consumer, collection centres, dealers, e-retailers, refurbishers, dismantlers and recyclers involved in manufacture, sale, transfer, purchase, collection, storage and processing of e-waste or electrical and electronic equipment (including their components, consumables, parts and spares which make the product operational) as listed in schedule 1 annexed to the E-Waste Management Rules. E-Waste is generated when old mobile phones, computers, laptops, TV sets and other electronic and electrical material becomes un-useable or obsolete. Common practice has been noticed where the user tends to dispose such waste by selling such items  to local scrap dealers/kabadiwala. Such dealers are generally ignorant about handling e-waste and as a result e-waste often ends up being burnt for extracting valuable metals which also release harmful gases to the atmosphere thus causing air pollution. The workshop was attended by the several officers of various Departments and organizations of Delhi Government which are also bulk consumers of electrical and electronic equipment. Detailed presentations were made by the experts in the field of e-waste management. Mr Imran Hussain raised his concern over the unauthorised dismantling and recycling of e-waste which is posing a great danger to the human health and environment. He also spoke that the E-waste should be disposed of only to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee authorised collection centres in strict adherence to the E-waste Management Rules. Environment Department/DPCC have authorized 37 collection centres for collecting e-waste. The Minister observed that besides authorizing collection centres, the concerned agencies need to make available disposal facilities for handling E-waste. He observed that practice of  burning of E-waste for extracting various metals is a big menace which needs to be curbed. He appealed to the public to lend support and corporation for effective management of E-waste.
